Virtual Air Hockey is Gaining Traction
The experimental Tron-like VR air hockey game Brawl (created by CCP Games, the same developers of EVE Online) is a step forward in the VR category. In the VR version the plastic pucks and paddles are replaced with a VR shield to block the opposing glowing boomerang disk and launch it back. At the same time each player can launch their own arsenal of disks. Points are scored when a very realistic VR disk strikes the body of a player.
Brawl uses the latest VR technology, including Occulus Rift’s Touchcontroller and kinetic feedback (when you strike a disk, it feels real).
VR Multiplayer Game Barking Irons is a Hit at International Consumer VR Exhibition and Conference (Reported by RePlay)
VR Multiplayer western-themed Barking Irons (VRStudios) was showcased at the May International Consumer VR Exhibition and Conference at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Using wireless headsets, the players can physically move using their athletic abilities to quickly and easily run/duck/jump around and look for openings to virtually shoot their opponents.
“The ability to physically move around a space with another player makes the experience feel much more natural and keeps you immersed in the game,” said Jamie Kelly of VRcade, head of the company’s gaming and entertainment-focused department.
“Now with Barking Irons, your physical actions are matched perfectly by the game and your athleticism is a core element to your level of success in the game,” said Ivan Blaustein of VRstudios. “This also makes spectating a game much more like a sporting event than a video game.”
What this Could Mean?
There is a lot of interest in VR and having a light weight wireless headset is one technology advancement that players have long awaited. Combined with an athletic element that will also attract the e-sports sector and multi-player capability, there is an excellent opportunity that we will start to see more content in the next 12 months. Once again, the virtual door to the virtual future of the out-of-home amusement industry looks virtually bright!
Alarming Video Shows How Criminals Install ATM Skimmers
The news site that investigates cybercrimes has posted a video demonstration of how insert skimmers are installed into ATMs. Krebs On Security‘s video shows the speed and ease at which criminals are able to install the insidious and virtually undetectable devices into ordinary ATMs.
The skimmers, which read and store credit and debit card information for later sale by criminals, are becoming a growing law enforcement problem. Experts say skimmer technology has been evolving at an alarming rate. So-called insert skimmers, many of them produced in China, are the latest iteration of the felonious technology.
…All was going well on a routine service call. In my hand was a UPS package from the manufacturer with the warranty replacement motor for the second top earning game at this particular location. OH NO! – When I removed the factory bubble wrap I can immediately see the carbon motor brush mounting assembly is broken. Yikes ! The little black plastic pieces from the assembly are all over the interior.
“Sometimes It’s OK To Use Duct Tape-This is One of Those Times”
(Duct Tape, NOT Duck Tape, for you younger generation technicians)
Reaching for my super strength Gorilla Tape…
1) I reinserted the Brush assembly to where it should be (taking note of the end curvature)
2) Since the assembly sits recessed, I placed a few extra small “pads” over the assembly so that the final wrap would keep enough pressure on the brush spring.
3) It never hurts to use a cable tie to keep it all in place.
Picture 3, showing the “good side,” the broken mount is on the other side under tape.
4) Installed the motor. After 3 weeks the motor is still working like a charm. I still have the option to replace this motor if it fails as it is still under warranty for another month.
AMOA & Foundations University Go “Back-to-Back” in October at Same Location!
AMOA 2016 Road Scholar Program – October 21-23 Phoenix, AZ will follow Foundations Entertainment University #40 (October 18-20). Both educational programs will take place at the Sheraton Phoenix Airport Hotel Tempe, AZ.
At the January AMOA State Meeting in San Antonio TRR reported that those present unanimously agreed that the best opportunities for operators to improve their businesses was to focus on working in partnership with the location owners/managers to better ‘market’ their game locations and therefore solidify their relevance. And it goes without saying that this practice will improve the bottom line for both the location and the game operator. At the AMOA State Meeting a plan was put together between AMOA and Foundations University to go back-to-back. This is a great opportunity for AMOA members to attend Foundations University and really learn how to market street locations as well as small and large footprint FECs. In addition, operators can learn more about operating redemption games and ticket merchandisers in a family entertainment center and how a debit card system is a key marketing tool, especially for tiered loyalty programs.
AMOA staff has followed the sage advice of its members and state association leaders and picked up the ball. One result is focusing the 2016 Road Scholar Program for operators to ‘stay ahead of the curve’ by gaining important business financial knowledge with a special industry panels and round tables event that includes the following business topics covering an optional Friday afternoon FEC related session, all day Saturday and Sunday morning:
- Risk Management including Best Practices in Security, Money Handling, Hiring Tips, and Mitigation
- New Overtime Rules & Guidelines that take effect on December 1, 2016
- Banking at Every Level of Business. What banks look at when making loans and offering lines of credit
- Operational Ratios for Route Operators
- Accounting & How to Read Your Financial Statements
- Operating in Small Footprint FECs – Optional Friday afternoon: Learn from operators who have found great success in operating in FECs

Sacoa is proud to announce that their debit PlayCard system is now fully integrated with the CenterEdge Software, one of the premier amusement industry providers of Point of Sale, Online Sales & Reservations, and Ticketing Systems for entertainment and recreation facilities. CenterEdge approached Sacoa back in 2015 when CenterEdge’s exclusive agreement with EMBED expired, offering to integrate their Advantage Point of Sale System with the Sacoa PlayCard System. The two company’s development teams worked together to complete the process. Now one year later, Sacoa is the 2nd debit card system that is integrated with CenterEdge to get an initial integration completed.
Brian Duke of Sacoa reports, “I am very very pleased to announce that after continued hard effort from both development teams, CenterEdge has just informed us the current build has passed all tests and is now on schedule for a Fall 2016 release. This is big news because in less than a two-year period, Sacoa has already reached the level of full integration with CenterEdge Software that took Embed over 5 years and we are now able to do everything the competition could do and even more. This includes deferred revenue accounting, enhanced kiosk functionality and CenterEdge’s ability to capture Sacoa self-service kiosk sales, and allowing more Sacoa time play options for the guests.”
“We have deployed a strong number of joint systems with Sacoa since introducing our initial interface last year,” notes Merrik Keller, Director of Business Development for CenterEdge. “These new enhancements really move us from an interface to a full integration with Sacoa, allowing joint users to reap the benefits of each system without compromising guest service and while maintaining consolidated revenue reporting.”

“We specifically DO NOT classify these as kiddie rides, because they are more than that (and the earnings prove it). Each game has an interactive component (a mechanical game, or a video game) that makes them more attractive to children. The weekly earnings we’ve seen in North America have so far exceeded all expectations. These 2 rides are quickly becoming our headliners for the family entertainment category. Both are $5999 at retail.”
Michael Tobin, Sales and Marketing
“Angry Birds and Ghostbusters, two huge movie licenses are both shipping and doing extremely well. We are seeing a lot of locations promote the products based on promo’s with the movies coming out. Also, we are starting to ship our 6 player rotary Zombie Snatcher. It incorporates the use of RFID, a self-reloading prize puck system, progressive bonus using letters on the ticket pucks, and a great Zombie theme! [‘the Crank: Ghostbusters currently ranks in the Top 10 and Angry Birds ranks #12, out of 80 games. Make sure you don’t forget to view the Top 80 Games and Test Games Spreadsheet Section.]
